Making Connections / Haciendo las conexiones

It’s not hugely exciting news this week, but important and necessary work nonetheless! This week has seen some pretty major earthworks going on in Labastida. Diggers galore, as we began to carve out a series of trenches connecting the four main zones of the property with the utilities on the street. Get ready for a stack of photos of piles of dirt.

Aunque no sea precisamente la más emocionante de las noticias, estas son cosas importantes y necesarias: esta semana hemos visto grandes movimientos de tierra en Labastida. Usando las excavadoras empezaron a crear una serie de zanjas conectando las cuatro zonas principales de la finca con los servicios en la calle. Prepárate para muchas fotos de montones de tierra.

This huge pine tree ran very close to the main trench and hopefully it can survive…

Next, a thin layer of cement to make sure the levels are perfect.

Siguiente, una capa fina de hormigón para asegurarse de que los niveles estén perfectos.

And then it’s time for the pipes. Here are two large pipes for sewerage and stormwater, and ready to go in, all the electrics.

Y ahora toca poner los tubos. Los dos grandes son de saneamiento y pluviales. Al lado todos son de la luz.

And above all those, we have the water and gas coming into the property.

Y por encima de todo eso, tenemos agua y gas entrando la finca.

And finally, everything is hidden away under a metre of dirt once again!

¡Y al final, todo está escondido debajo de un metro de tierra otra vez!

Going with the grain / La tarima del suelo

One of the features of the old house that we most wanted to maintain was the original floorboards. Below you can see the “before” photos, and in general the floors looked (in my opinion) pretty good!

Una de las cosas más atractivas de la casa vieja que queríamos mantener era la tarima original del suelo. Aquí puedes ver las fotos de antes, y en general (desde mi punto de vista) no tenía mala pinta!

However some parts had considerable damage from so many years of wear, not to mention some boring insects had had a feast.

Sin embargo, algunas partes tenían bastante daño después de tantos años de uso, sin decir nada de algunos insectos que habían aprovechado.

The first step was to fill in the gaps where the floorboards were missing, damaged or running in the opposite direction to the rest of the room. The new boards are to be stained so as to not look new.

El primer paso fue rellenar los huecos donde faltaba tarima, o donde la tarima estaba muy dañada o colocada en dirección perpendicular al resto de la habitación. Luego las tarimas nuevas están pintadas con una tinta para que no parezcan nuevas.

The old boards were sanded back, and levelled as much as possible.

La tarima vieja fue lijada, y nivelada tanto como posible.

It left lots of problems very evident in the floor, so the next step was to fill in all the gaps with a resin.

Dejó muy visibles todos los problemas en la tarima, así que el siguiente paso fue rellenar los huecos con una resina.

Later, with the varnish applied and polished, we have an incredible historic wooden floor, richly varied in colour and grain, that looks good as new!

Más tarde, con el barniz y el pulido, conseguimos un suelo antiguo de madera increíble, variada en color y veta, que parece nuevo!

Tejado del anexo (Parte 3) / Annex Roof (Part 3)

See our last post for the wooden structure which was built last week.

The next steps were adding all the layers for the rest of the roof. Starting with a layer of waterproofing…

Después de la estructura van todas las capas del tejado, empezando con una impermeabilización.

On top of this, a thick layer of insulation to keep the house toasty in winter and cooler in summer. There are three layers of rockwool, maybe 15cm or so in total.

Por encima de eso, una capa gorda de aislamiento para mantener el calor en invierno y fresco en verano. Hay tres capas de lana de roca, algunos 15 centímetros en total.

On top of the insulation, another layer of waterproofing, slats to hold everything down and then the tiles! (In the photo lots look the same colour but they are coated with a layer of dust from where the tiles were being cut.)

Por encima del aislamiento, va otra capa de impermeabilización, unas tiras para atar todo y encima las tejas! (En esta foto parece que muchas de las tejas son del mismo color, pero eso es por el polvo de donde cortaban las tejas.)

And here we have the roof more or less finished, ready to start with the interior…

Y aquí está más o menos terminado, y listo para seguir con el interior…

Tejado del anexo (Parte 2) / Annex Roof (Part 2)

We finished the last post with the base of the new roof in place and the crossbeams being added. The next step was the addition of the regularly spaced lateral beams to create the skeleton of the building.

Terminamos la última noticia con la base del nuevo tejado colocada y las diagonales en proceso. La próxima etapa fue la adición de las vigas laterales, colocadas uniformemente para crear el esqueleto del tejado.

The beams in the kitchen are a little chaotic to allow a generous skylight in the middle.

Las vigas de la cocina parecen un poco caóticas para dejar un hueco para una claraboya grande en medio.

The next step… slats were added to the external parts, which will be visible.

Después se añadieron las tarimas a las partes exteriores, que quedarán vistas.

This means the two levels will have the same eaves and give much greater continuity to the building than previously.

Significa que los vuelos de las dos cubiertas son iguales, que da mucha más continuidad al edificio de la que antes tenía.

In the higher part of the roof, we are using a basic chipboard as we are going to put plaster in order to have better lighting in the kitchen and dining room.

En la parte más alta del tejado, estamos poniendo tablas en lugar de tarima, porque al final pondremos pladur con focos que darán mejor iluminación a la cocina y al comedor.

We are so so excited by the progress this week; finally we can imagine what this new part of the house will look and feel like. Even though we weren’t permitted to put a flat/terrace rooftop, from the street the new roof looks really elegant and the feeling of space inside is fantastic!

Estamos tan emocionados con todo el progreso esta semana: al final podemos imaginar como parecerá y sentirá esta parte nueva de la casa. Aunque no nos permitieran mantener el tejado plano con terraza, desde la calle el nuevo tejado inclinado nos parece muy elegante y la sensación de espacio en el interior es increíble.

Tejado del anexo (parte 1) / Annex Roof (Part 1)

On Friday the wood for the roof finally arrived. Like the main roof of the house it all comes made to measure and fits together like a giant jigsaw puzzle, the beams numbered with their location following the plan.

El viernes llegó al final la madera para el tejado del anexo. Como la cubierta principal, toda la madera llega hecha a medida y se coloca como un enorme puzzle, cada viga con un número que indica su posición según el plan.

And today the process begins, with the largest beams resting on the iron pillars to form a base for the roof.

Y hoy empieza el proceso. Las vigas más grandes reposan en los pilares de hierro para formar la base del tejado.

First beam in place

La primera viga colocada

The largest beam, over 8 metres long, runs along the north face, to allow uninterrupted views of the mountain.

La viga más grande, de más de 8 metros, se extiende a lo largo de la cara norte para permitir vistas ininterrumpidas de la montaña.

And once the base is in place…

the crossbeams can go on. Most of the weight of the roof sits on the pillars, but a corbel fixed to the stone becomes the anchor point for these beams. Above this, some stone is removed so that the beams extend into the solid walls of the old house.

Y cuando esté puesta la base…

se añaden las transversales. La mayoría del peso está distribuido por los pilares nuevos, pero una ménsula fijada en la piedra sirve como un ancla para estas vigas. Por encima y detrás, se quita un poco de la piedra para que la viga se extienda dentro de la pared sólida de la casa vieja.

Construyendo el anexo / Building the annex

The first step was the laying of the slab, which you can see here!

Empezó con la losa que se puso hace unos meses… que se puede ver aquí!

(There is something not straight in this photo, but it’s not the pillar, or the slab! / *Hay algo en esta foto que no está recto, ¡pero no es ni el pilar ni la losa!* )

These iron pillars will hold up the new annex.

Estos pilares de hierro apoyan el nuevo anexo.

The next step was to add the walls, double brick, with insulation between.

El siguiente paso fue la construcción de las paredes, con doble ladrillo y aislamiento en medio.

The gaps are for our kitchen windows. And now it’s ready for the roof to be mounted next week…

Los huecos que se ven serán las ventanas de nuestra cocina. Y ahora está todo listo para poner la cubierta la semana que viene…

New rustic doors / Puertas rústicas pero nuevas

A general observation about restoration and construction in the modern world is that all too often, when something needs to be replaced, the easy option is to buy something mass-produced and cheaply made. However if by chance you are able to find something local, unique and of quality then what might have been nondescript and unnoteworthy could instead become a feature. So it was with our front doors.

We were very lucky to hear of a carpenter in Haro, who makes solid timber doors by hand, crafted to appear ancient but with all the convenience of a modern door. These doors are real pieces of art, made with a lot of care, they are beautiful to touch and stunning to see.

I’m also conscious that I may look obsessed with stable doors… for me they’re part of the idealised image of country living, and there are quite a few beautiful stable doors in the older houses in the village – so we are in keeping with the style of the region. Of course the original purpose of stable doors was to control animals; either to allow farmhouses to let in air and light but prevent animals from getting into the house, or to be able to keep an eye on horses inside stables without the animals being able to escape. As of yet, we don’t have concrete plans to keep animals on the property, but who knows…

Una observación sobre la reforma y construcción en general: normalmente en el mundo moderno cuando hay que remplazar algo, la opción más sencilla es comprar algo producido industrialmente y de forma barata. Pero si puedes encontrar el producto que necesitas, no en el hipermercado pero un producto de la zona, único y de calidad, entonces algo que habría sido insignificante y anodino se puede convertir en un verdadero atractivo. Y así fue con estas puertas.

Tuvimos mucha suerte de oír hablar sobre un carpintero en Haro que hace puertas de madera a mano. Están hechas para parecer viejas pero con todas las ventajas de una puerta moderna. Estas puertas son obras de arte, hechas con mucho cuidado, tienen encanto y es un placer tocar la madera trabajada y ver las puertas en el conjunto.

Me he dado cuenta de que estoy un poco obsesionado con las puertas partidas (en ingles se llaman puertas de establo). Para mí, forman parte de la imagen idealizada de la vida rural, y hays algunas muy bonitas en las casas viejas del pueblo, así que conforman al estilo de la zona. Originalmente el propósito de estas puertas era para controlar los animales: o para dejar que aire y luz entrasen en el caserío siempre manteniendo los animales fuera, o, en el caso de los establos, para poder vigilar los caballos dentro sin que pudieran salir. Hasta ahora no tenemos ningún plan para tener animales pero ¿quién sabe?

The Front Door / La Puerta Principal

The front door, which opens to the living room in the old house, will have a window (and it will in fact be the largest window on this floor). As we couldn’t open new windows in the façade, this compensates, letting in lots of light to what was previously quite a dark space.

La puerta principal abre al salón en la casa vieja (un espacio que era bastante oscuro). Por eso tendrá una ventana que en realidad será la ventana más grande de esta planta. No podíamos abrir ventanas nuevas en la fachada, pero así ganamos mucha luz.

The Cottage / La Casita

Words can’t describe how beautiful this entranceway is.

Me faltan las palabras para decir lo bonita que es esta entrada.

The Basement / El Sótano

This is quite a weird door for a few reasons. Firstly, it’s a very low doorway, like a hobbit door. It would have been impossible to buy a standard door to fit this entrance! I’ve definitely bumped my head a few times on the lintel. Secondly, the holes you can see are to allow ventilation to the basement, which although it is set in the rock and maintains a steady temperature, needs airflow, especially for the cellar and as our boilers and aerothermal heating system are going to be located here.

Esta puerta es extraña por dos razones. Primera, es super baja, como una puerta de hobbits. Esta puerta se tenía que hacer a medida, una estándar nunca cabría. Por eso aquí me he dado golpes en la cabezas más de una vez. Segunda, los agujeros que puedes ver permiten la ventilación del sótano, aunque esté dentro de la roca y mantenga una temperatura constante, necesita una corriente de aire, sobre todo para el calado y porque se va a colocar la caldera con calefacción aerotérmica aquí.

Completed Façades / Fachadas Acabadas

East Face / Cara Este

I forgot to take photos! The hidden side of the house… Here it is almost finished, but with the scaffolding still in place. The most significant change here was the prison-like bars over the windows which have been removed.

¡Olvidé sacar fotos del lado oculto de la casa! Aquí está casi terminado, pero con los andamios todavía puestos. La cosa más notable es que hemos quitado todas las rejas de las ventanas.

South Face / Cara Sur

These side of the house was in much better state; facing south, it stays drier and wasn’t as dirty as the back of the house.

It’s not so easy to see in the photos but this side of the house did have a fair few cracks and also a number of added features which were not original, including the shutters. You can see the latches for the shutters which were just whacked on with grey cement. All of those things are now removed.

Este lado de la casa estaba en un estado mucho mejor, mirando al sur se queda más seco, y por lo tanto más limpio que detrás.

No se ve muy bien en estas fotos pero en esta fachada también había varias rajas y cosas añadidas como las contraventanas. Se ve los ganchos de las contraventanas que añadieron con un poco de cemento gris. Todo esto ahora se ha quitado.

Guttering / Canalones

The copper piping arrived and the downpipes were added to the front and back of the main house and the entrance to the cottage. For now the metal is striking, but very soon it will dullen to something more subtle.

Los tubos de cobre llegaron y los bajantes se añadieron en frente y detrás de la casa y en la entrada a la casita. Ahora el metal es muy llamativo, pero muy pronto se atenuará con los elementos para llegar a ser más sutil.

Chimneys / Chimeneas

One final detail; the brick of the chimneys was rendered with the same colour as the new grout of the building, so hopefully they now also demand less attention and fit in with the rest of the house.

Un detalle extra; se tapó el ladrillo de las chimeneas con el mismo rejunteo del edificio, con suerte ahora no llaman la atención y queda mejor con el conjunto de la casa.

The Arch / El Arco

It was going to be tricky to clean the arch without damaging it, so instead we removed a bit of mortar and covered it with the same colour as the house, mostly to get rid of the grey.

Iba a ser muy complicado limpiar el arco sin hacerle daño, así que en lugar de hacerlo todo, quitamos un poco del rejunteo y lo tapamos con el mismo color que la casa, para quitar el gris que había.

After / Después

The Workshop / El Taller

And lastly, the new entry to the workshop which was opened a few months ago was tidied up in the most simple way possible. You can see more before photos here.

Por último, en la manera más sencilla, arreglaron la nueva entrada al taller que se abrió hace unos meses. Puedes ver más fotos de antes aquí.

Tiling time / Alicatando

This week we’re getting the bathrooms put in at last! / ¡Esta semana andamos poniendo los azulejos en los baños de la casa!

We had a lot of debate about how to do the waterproofing. In the end we have these sheets of overlapping plastic laminate. / Había un poco de debate sobre como hacer la impermeabilización. Al final tenemos superpuestas estas laminas.

What with the lockdown we chose the tiles in the warehouse without taking samples, so this was our first chance to see our choice in situ. / Por culpa de la cuarentena elegimos las baldosas en el pabellón sin poder llevar muestras a casa, por lo tanto esta era nuestra primera oportunidad para verlas in situ.

The first tile! The last layer of tiles closest to the floor will be added later once all the drainage is in. / ¡La primera baldosa colocada! La capa más baja se añadirá después del suelo cuando estén puestos todos los desagües.

The base tiles in place. The gap is for a mirror. / El azulejo puesto. El hueco es para un espejo.

We ordered samples online of some tiles from a Spanish company to bring some colour. / Pedimos muestras de baldosas de una empresa valenciana para añadir un poco de color.

Here’s the result, with a pop of colour in the shared/kids’ bathroom. / Y aquí tenéis el resultado final, una explosion de color en el baño compartido (para los niños).

In the ensuite of the master bedroom we opted for a dark velvety green. It’s a little darker than expected but gives quite a luxurious touch. / En el baño de la habitación principal optamos por un verde oscuro, aterciopelado, suntuoso. Resulta un poco más oscuro de lo que esperábamos, pero da un toque lujoso.

It feels a bit like we’re guessing with these decorative choices, and the circumstances in the last couple of months haven’t been ideal, but we hope you like the colours and styles we have chosen. More photos to come in the next week or so!

Siento que estamos dando palos de ciego con estas decisiones creativas, y las circunstancias de los últimos meses no han sido las más apropiadas. De todas formas esperamos que os gusten los colores y estilos que hemos elegido. ¡Tendremos más fotos durante la próxima semana!

Más Fachadas / More Façades

Today I want to share some before and after photos of the buildings.

In recent weeks the stone has been cleaned, the old grey grout removed and a more neutral stone-coloured mortar used to rejoin the stonework.

We are so proud of how shiny and new the buildings look. So far two walls of the main house are completed as well as the two sides of the cottage that we have access to.

Hoy quiero compartir algunas fotos de los edificios de antes y ahora.

Durante las últimas semanas, han limpiado la piedra quitando el viejo rejunteo gris para cambiarlo por un color más neutral.

Nos da orgullo ver como brillan los edificios de nuevo. Ya han terminado dos fachadas de la casa principal, y los dos lados de la casita a los cuales tenemos acceso.

North Face / Cara Norte

Looking north and facing the mountain, it doesn’t ever get any sunlight, so this was the darkest and dirtiest of the façades, but also the most satisfying to see the results.

The two holes you can see in the wall have been deliberately left, as a pair of falcons make their nests here. Last year we had two falcon chicks, and once again there are eggs at the moment.

Mirando hacia el norte y la montaña, nunca recibe la luz del sol, así que era la más oscura y sucia de las fachadas, pero también la más gratificante a limpiar.

Los dos agujeros pequeños que ves en esta fachada los hemos dejado a propósito porque un par de halcones hacen su nido ahí. El año pasado tenían dos bebés, y este año hay huevos otra vez.

West Face / Cara Oeste

This is where the kitchen previously was, and note the new long window under the eaves.

Donde antes estaba la cocina, y ahora con la ventana larga y nueva debajo de los aleros.

Cottage Entrance / Entrada de la Casita

The stonework here was in quite a good state, but I really hope that changing the colour of the mortar was worth it. I think it looks warmer and more natural now.

La piedra aquí estaba en mucho mejor estado, pero espero que haya merecido la pena cambiar el color del rejunteo. El gris me parecía frío e industrial, ahora creo que parece más cálido y natural.

Cottage East face / Cara este de la casita

The interesting thing about this wall is that it seems to be facing the wrong way. From old photographs, we suspect that it was originally part of the old town wall, and the “cottage” was nothing more than a “lean-to” built outside the town and propped up against the old wall. You can tell because of how the window is angled, and the height of the wall, which is notably higher than the current building. (See photo below.)

Where our front yard is now, there must have been buildings and streets in what was once the Jewish quarter of the town. Meanwhile, the cottage must have been a barn or workshop of some kind… More investigation required…

Lo interesante de esta pared es que parece que está al revés. Gracias a fotos viejas, sospechamos que antes formaba parte de la muralla del pueblo, y nuestra “casita” nada más que un cobertizo apoyado contra la muralla y fuera del casco histórico. Se ve en la forma y el ángulo de la ventana, y también en la altura de la muralla, que es perceptiblemente más alta que el edificio existente. (Ve la foto arriba.)

Ahora donde está nuestro jardín antiguamente puede ser que hubiera edificios y calles en lo que antes era el barrio judío. La casita tiene que haber sido un granero o almacén añadido más tarde. Falta más investigación todavía…
