It feels a long time ago that we were clearing out this old kitchen with the family. There were so many options on the table. Nearly three years have passed since then and we can finally reveal the transformation.

We were faced with a few limitations in terms of the design: firstly, we weren’t able to change the footprint of the building, so the size of the kitchen was fixed. Secondly, as the front door of the house has a step, we needed to provide level access to the house through the kitchen door. And lastly, the shape of the roof had already been determined by local heritage – though we didn’t realise how much of a feature the ceiling would be! The exposed timber beams are so striking, and remain a really distinctive aspect of the kitchen. So here below you can see the space ready to go.

Parece que ha pasado mucho tiempo desde el día que limpiamos la cocina vieja con toda la familia ayudando. Teníamos muchas posibilidades entre las que elegir. Desde entonces han pasado casi tres años y al final podemos revelar la transformación.

Nos enfrentamos con algunas limitaciones en el diseño de la cocina. En primer lugar, no podíamos cambiar ni la forma ni el tamaño del anexo, así que el espacio ya estaba decidido. Segundo, por culpa del escalón en la puerta principal de la casa, hacía falta crear un acceso a cota cero desde una puerta en la entrada de la cocina. Y por último, la forma del tejado (inclinado) ya estaba ordenada por el ayuntamiento y su plan del casco histórico del pueblo. Lo que no nos dábamos cuenta es que el techo iba a ser tan llamativo. Las vigas de madera son tan visibles y resulta que da un aspecto muy distintivo a la cocina. En la foto de abajo puedes ver el nuevo espacio después de la obra listo para montar la cocina.

Needless to say, the design of kitchen is something we gave a lot of thought to. We wanted to combine an Australian attitude where the kitchen is the heart of the home and cooking an activity shared by the whole family, with a Basque emphasis on quality food and food preparation, imitating the style of the world-famous Basque gastronomic societies. We were also conscious that we wanted a kitchen to host meals for big groups of up to 20 people. This meant a few unorthodox requests: the oven, hotplate, fridge and sink are all much larger than those typically seen in people’s homes here, and we wanted as much bench space as possible.

Thankfully we had the help of a fantastic local kitchen design company who helped to bring our ideas to life, and convinced us to make a few important changes which have contributed to the overall look of the kitchen, like leaving as much of the original stone uncovered as possible, moving the fridge to avoid blocking the view and extending the benchtop into the internal window of the old house open to the living room. We were able to be a bit daring with the design too: for instance we chose a dark blue tone for the cupboards and bulky rustic range hood to complement the stone. This allowed us to create a kitchen that combined modern and traditional elements and created a space that was interesting and different.

No hace falta decir que el diseño de la cocina es algo en que habíamos pensado muchísimo. Queríamos combinar la actitud australiana que cree que la cocina es el corazón de un hogar y que cocinar es una actividad para toda la familia, con la importancia dada a la calidad de comida y cocina típica del País Vasco, imitando un poco el estilo de sus sociedades gastronómicas famosas por todo el mundo. Éramos conscientes de que la cocina tendría que servir para grupos grandes de hasta 20 personas. Significaba que teníamos que pedir unas cosas atípicas: el horno, la placa, la nevera, el fregadero – queríamos todos más grandes que los que se ven normalmente aquí en casas. También queríamos el máximo espacio de encimera posible.

Por suerte tuvimos la ayuda de una empresa maravillosa de diseño de cocinas que nos ayudó a realizar nuestras ideas, y nos convencieron a modificar algunos detalles que han mejorado mucho el aspecto final de la cocina, por ejemplo, dejando tanta piedra como fuera posible sin tapar, moviendo el frigorífico para no obstruir el paso y las vistas al comedor, y extendiendo la encimera dentro de la ventana original de la casa que pasa al salón. También gracias a la naturaleza de este proyecto, podíamos ser un poco atrevidos con algunos elementos de la cocina: elegimos un azul marino para los muebles y una campana grande y rústica para acentuar la piedra. Así la cocina tendrá un aspecto que combina lo moderno con lo tradicional y crea algo diferente y curioso.

The installation of the kitchen happened very quickly. Despite concerns about delays and fears that the appliances wouldn’t arrive with all the problems of the pandemic, everything ran like clockwork. The bulk of the installation took place over two days, with everything arriving made to measure and very quickly put into place. It was fantastic to be there and watch the kitchen take shape before our eyes over the course of just a few hours.

El montaje de la cocina pasó en un abrir y cerrar de ojos. A pesar de las preocupaciones que teníamos sobre la posibilidad de retrasos o problemas con proveedores por culpa de la pandemia, todo fue como un reloj. La mayoría de la instalación ocurrió a lo largo de dos días, con todo llegando la primera mañana, hecho a medida, y colocado rápidamente. Era muy emocionante estar ahí y ver la cocina cogiendo forma en frente de nuestros ojos en unas pocas horas.

A few last minute decisions had to be made: like deciding the height of the range hood and measuring for the benchtop and splashback. The fridge arrived, and our huge oven even plugged in.

Había algunas decisiones de último momento: por ejemplo, la altura de la campana y las medidas de la encimera y los copetes. La nevera llegó, e incluso conectaron el horno enorme.

A week later, the masons arrived to fit the countertop. A super resistant material in a white colour imitating stone and contrasting with the blue cupboards and yellow stone of the wall. The stove top and sink were set into the bench and the kitchen was complete. Now we are just waiting for the plumber to come in the next few days to connect everything (tap, washer, dishwasher and fridge), and electrician to put LED strips under the hanging cabinets and then we can get cooking!

And finally, because very soon this kitchen will be available for the whole world to use and enjoy, I’m going to put a handful of photos so you can see what a joy this space will be to share a glass of wine with friends and prepare a big family meal.

Una semana más tarde vinieron los marmolistas para poner la encimera. Es un material super resistente de color blanco roto como una piedra natural, pero da un contraste con la piedra amarilla de la pared y el azul marino de los muebles. La placa y el fregadero fueron metidos en la encimera y la cocina está lista. Ahora solo falta que venga el fontanero a conectar el agua (el grifo, lavadora, lavavajillas y nevera) y el electricista que va a poner unas tiras de led debajo de los armarios colgados y ya podemos empezar a cocinar!

Y para terminar, (porque sabemos que muy pronto esta cocina maravillosa estará disponible para que todo el mundo disfrute y aproveche), voy a compartir algunas fotos para que veáis lo increíble que va a ser este espacio para picar algo y compartir una copa de vino mientras se cocina una gran comida con amigos y familiares.

The house was almost closed up but one large window was still missing: the huge opening with the marvellous view that I’ve written about before and won’t stop posting photos of, which finally needed to be closed to the elements before the cold weather arrived, and just in time before the kitchen was installed. At last we could block out the cold winds from the mountain!

I’ll spare you the details, but needless to say, not everything went according to plan. Nonetheless, the final result is spectacular.

La casa estaba casi cerrada, pero faltaba una ventana, e igual era la más importante: la abertura gigante con esa vista impresionante de la que he escrito tantas veces y publicado tantas fotos. Había que cerrar esta corriente ya que ha empezado a hacer frio por las mañanas y la han puesto justo antes de instalar la cocina, que llegó inmediatamente después! Qué suerte que podíamos parar estos vientos frescos del monte.

No os voy a cansar con los detalles, pero no hace falta decir que no todo fue según lo planeado. Sin embargo, el resultado es espectacular.

I wrote recently about how we were changing the access to the property and putting on site parking here. The only thing missing was the gates to finally be able to lock up the property and have clear access from the street.

Hace poco escribí sobre el cambio del acceso a la finca y el aparcamiento, que puedes ver aquí. Pero faltaban las puertas de la calle, para poder cerrar la propiedad al final y tener un acceso bueno y claro desde la calle.

Being located on top of a ridge with steep falls on three sides, it’s pretty important that we have rails along those sides of the property. That meant a lot of new balustrades, as well as lifting some of the old ones to meet the council’s safety requirements.

Gracias a su ubicación al final de la colina del pueblo, la casa tiene caídas importantes en tres lados. Como resultado, era importante que hubiera barandillas en todos estos sitios, tanto nuevas como recicladas, levantando algunas para que lleguen a la altura necesaria.

Firstly, on one side of the house, there is a cliff face with a wide staircase leading down into the lower terrace and garden. The rail along the top was very low, and as we levelled the ground in front of the house it became even lower. The staircase didn’t have any sort of rail at all. We feared the old grape vine which was thoroughly intertwined in the bars would have to be sacrificed. Thankfully, we were able to raise the old balustrade, fill in beneath with stone and install a new banister for the stairs, without too much damage to the vine.

Para empezar, a un lado de la casa principal hay un desnivel con una escalera ancha que baja a una terraza y el jardín. La barandilla existente estaba bastante baja, y cuando nivelamos el suelo en frente de la casa al subir hizo que la barandilla quedase aún más baja. La escalera no tenía ningún tipo de barra. Nos preocupaba que tendríamos que sacrificar la parra vieja muy entrelazada con los palos viejos. Por suerte, han conseguido levantar la vieja barandilla, rellenar debajo con piedra e instalar la barandilla necesaria en la escalera, y todo esto sin matar la parra.

On the North terrace at the back of the house, there was an old balustrade with pillars of red brick on one half and, on the other half, a low stone wall. You can see lots of pictures from before here, and I’ll put a couple more of how it was before the new balustrade.

On top of the stone wall was a much more complex procedure: the frame was welded on site, and then taken to the workshop where the bars were added.

When we get to the garden on this side, of course a beautiful old tamarisk tree was in the way. A creative solution was needed to avoiding damaging the tree.

Between here and the cottage, we wanted to reuse the old balustrade once again, so once again it needed lifting and filling below with stone.

Y el último paso, entre este punto y la casita, queríamos reutilizar la barandilla vieja. Al igual que antes, había que levantarla y poner piedra debajo.

And that leaves three sides of the property with a proper limit. Just the front side facing the street to go.

Así dejamos tres lados de la finca acabados con un limite seguro. Solo falta el frente mirando a la calle.

So many things have been going on in the last few weeks it’s difficult to know what to share on here. We’re really pushing to get the house closed and ready for the new kitchen to arrive at the end of the month. It means lots of details, some big and lots small, and the closer we get to finishing the more little things there seem to be. Nonetheless, here I’m going to share some of the big advances we’ve seen recently. Get ready for lots of photos.

Había tantas cosas pasando en las últimas semanas que la verdad es que no sé por donde empezar. Tenemos prisa para terminar el anexo y cerrar la casa antes de la llegada de la cocina a finales de este mes. Significa que hay muchísimos detalles, algunos grandes y muchos pequeños, y cuanto más nos acercamos al final del proyecto, más cosas parece que hay. Sin embargo, aquí voy a compartir algunos de los mayores avances que hemos visto recientemente. ¡Prepárate para muchas fotos!

1. Painting / Pintura

Leaving the beams visible, the new structure of the roof and the walls have gradually been painted white and new. In the pictures below you can see the painting was still underway as the floor was going in.

Dejando las vigas vistas, han pintado gradualmente la estructura del tejado y las paredes del anexo dejando todo blanco y nuevo. En las fotos de abajo, puedes ver que seguían con el proceso de pintar el anexo mientras ponían el suelo.

2. Skylight / Claraboya

In a moment of whimsy while trying to create the summery conservatory feel, we asked for a big skylight to go in over the kitchen; it’s going to be the space in the house with the most natural light. It looked small compared to the huge space for the window below it, but once the frames for the window are in place, the size of the skylight more or less matches the largest of the windows below.

Como un capricho mío, para crear este efecto veraniego de un invernadero, pedimos un velux grande encima del fregadero de la cocina. Esta va a ser la parte de la casa con más luz natural. Sí es cierto que parece pequeña comparada con el hueco de la ventana de abajo, pero en cuanto esté colocado el marco de la ventana quedarán más o menos iguales de tamaño (la claraboya y el fijo directamente debajo).

3. Tiles / Baldosas

Choosing tiles is a daunting task; the sheer number on offer is overwhelming, even if you have a clear colour or style in mind (and of course we didn’t). Not to mention the technical specifications, as we wanted the tiles for the kitchen, dining room and terraces all the same, indoor and outdoor, with wet surfaces outside, underfloor heating, high traffic, etc, etc. So after hours looking and constantly doubting ourselves, when we finally saw one that made both of us instinctively say “Oh I like this!” that’s definitely a good sign. And it’s very reassuring, when you follow up with some research that shows it seems North Sydney council also liked this particular tile. It’s made in Spain of course! And we are super happy with the result.

Con tanta variedad de baldosas disponible, agobia elegir aunque tuviéramos una idea clara de color o estilo (y por supuesto no teníamos). Y eso sin mencionar todas las especificaciones técnicas, porque queríamos las mismas baldosas para la cocina, el comedor y las terrazas, tanto dentro como fuera, con superficies que puedan mojarse, suelo radiante, mucho trafico, etc, etc… Así que, después de horas mirando con cientos de dudas, cuando vimos una baldosa que instantáneamente dijimos los dos “¡Esta, sí me gusta!”, eso fue una buena señal. Y nos tranquilizó mucho cuando la buscamos y vimos que al ayuntamiento de North Sydney también les gustó. Pero está hecha en España, ¡claro que sí! Y estamos super contentos con el resultado.

4. Windows / Ventanas

This room has three big windows. Two facing West and one East. We wanted them identical, with two narrow opening windows (the same size as in the cottage and the attic) and a larger fixed window pane in the middle to give uninterrupted views. The windowsill of cut stone was also added this month.

Este espacio comedor-cocina tiene tres ventanas grandes; dos mirando al oeste y una al este. Queríamos que fueran iguales, con dos ventanas abatibles en los lados (del mismo tamaño que en la casita y el ático) y un cristal grande fijo en medio para disfrutar de las vistas. Los vierteaguas de piedra cortada debajo de las ventanas también se añadieron este mes.

5. Door / Puerta

The kitchen door faces south so we wanted all the light to come in and create a warm inviting entrance, and equally to pull people out into the garden. I’m pretty proud of my off-the-cuff design of these windows.

La puerta de la cocina mira al sur y queríamos dejar que mucha luz pudiera pasar para crear una entrada luminosa y acogedora, y también para atraer a la gente a salir al jardín. Estoy un poco orgulloso de mi diseño improvisado de la forma de estas ventanas.

6. Guttering / Canalones

I don’t have much to say about this. Finally no more hanging blue plastic. It’s copper.

Despite a few last minute changes the electrics are all ready in the kitchen too, with powerpoints, switches, thermostat all ready to go…

It was a necessary evil to try and fit parking on site, but this was one of the reasons we wanted to change the access to the property and make use of the empty space in front, bordered by street on two sides and the workshop on the third side. Here’s a photo of the view from the street beforehand, you can see the dead space to the left.

Era un mal necesario que hacía falta un aparcamiento en la finca. Fue el motivo por el cual queríamos cambiar el acceso a la calle y aprovechar del espacio vacío en frente, delimitado por calles en dos lados y el taller en el tercero. Aquí se ve el acceso desde la calle antes de empezar con la zona inútil a la izquierda.

With the space cleared, the next step was to outline with iron the area and separate what will be garden from carpark. / Con el espacio limpio, el próximo paso fue marcar con chapa los limites del jardín y el parking.

The summer has drawn to a sudden close and the project is in its final stages and that means organising the mess in front of the house, the entrance to the property, drive, pathways and a bit of landscaping.

El verano ha acabado rápidamente y la obra está en sus últimas etapas, significa que toca organizar el desastre en frente de la casa, la entrada a la finca, el parking, los caminos y el paisaje en general.

The previous annex was a red brick addition made in the middle of the last century. You can see pictures in earlier posts, but it looked something like this:

As it was falling away down the hill the whole thing had to be replaced, but the new annex is also built of red brick:

Of course, we wanted to get it looking more discreet so it would blend in and use a colour typical of the old part of the village. On the other hand we didn’t want to match the stone too closely as it obviously isn’t stone and would never be quite the same. So we took a tour around town to see what the neighbours have done and what we most liked.

Por supuesto, queríamos que la casa fuera un poco más discreta para camuflarse entre las casa viejas del pueblo. A la vez, no queríamos intentar imitar la piedra cuando es obvio que no es. Por eso dimos una vuelta al pueblo para ver que han hecho los vecinos y que nos gusta más.

It seemed that for the most part a neutral off-white sandy stone colour was the go, so we followed suit.

We’re really trying now to make rapid progress with the new part of the house: where the kitchen and dining room will be. The slab was laid over five months ago, before the walls and roof went up. You can see it here.

Because this part of the house is new, and we knew the floor was going to be tiled (not wood like the rest of the house) we really wanted to have underfloor heating. That way we avoid needing wall space for radiators and also have that lovely sensation walking barefoot through the house.

To prevent all the heat being lost to the cold ground beneath, it’s important to have a thick layer of insulation. The electricity and water connections are all fitted into this layer of foam.

Ahora estamos intentando avanzar lo más rápido posible con la cocina y el comedor en la parte nueva de la casa. La losa se puso hace cinco meses, antes de poner las paredes y la cubierta, y la puedes ver aquí.

A causa de que esta parte de la casa es nueva, sabíamos que iba a estar alicatada (no de madera como en el resto de la casa), y queríamos tener la calefacción debajo del suelo. Así evitamos necesitar paredes y espacio para radiadores y creamos esta sensación tan agradable cuando vas andando descalzo por la casa.

Para prevenir que todo el calor se escape a la tierra fría de abajo, es importante que tenga una buena capa de aislamiento. Todas las conexiones de agua y luz están metidas dentro de esta capa de espuma.

Above this runs the tubes of hot water, in various distinct loops so it doesn’t lose heat.

We’re getting to the stage where we’re thinking about the final look and layout of the property, including some of the most important, interesting and beautiful spaces – the “terraces”, those typically Spanish outdoor patio areas for sitting out in the sun with a glass of vino, enjoying the stunning views and the good weather while it lasts.

One of the things we really wanted to change about this house was to make the gardens more accessible and useable throughout the year, with a better connection (most physically and stylistically) between what was going on inside and out.

The main house has two main “terrace” areas. Yesterday and today both terraces were levelled and new concrete was laid. It’s a work in progress for now, but we’re beginning to see what it could look like! The next step will be adding tiles and replacing the balustrade.

The larger of the two is hidden behind the house, facing north, and has good sun in spring and summer, especially in the mornings and evenings, and also has the best views of the mountain. Below you can see the photos from last week and today. The balustrade will be replaced soon, to the new height required.

Estamos llegando al momento cuando hay que pensar en como quedará el look y diseño de la finca, incluso unos de los espacios más importantes, interesantes y bonitos: las terrazas, estos espacios típicos para sentarte en el sol, tomar unas copas de buen vino, disfrutar del jardín, el buen tiempo y las vistas impresionantes por todos lados.

Una de las cosas que más queríamos cambiar de la casa, era conectar más el interior con el exterior (tanto fisicamente como estilísticamente), y hacer que los jardines sean accesibles y utilizables todo el año.

La casa principal tiene dos zonas de terraza. Ayer y hoy, las dos se han nivelado, y echado hormigón nuevo. Sigue en progreso, pero ahora empiezas a ver como podrá ser pronto! El próximo paso será poner baldosas y volver a poner la barandilla.

La terraza más grande de las dos está escondida detrás de la casa, mirando al norte, pero con mucho sol en la primavera y el verano, sobre todo por las mañanas y tardes, y también disfruta de las mejores vistas del monte Toloño. Aquí se pueden ver las fotos de hace una semana y de hoy. La barandilla hay que volver a ponerla con la nueva altura de la terraza.

The second terrace is smaller, and faces south at the entrance to the kitchen. As we head back to winter it has more and more sunshine and will form a sort of entrance patio to the house.

La segunda terraza es más pequeña y mira al sur en la entrada a la cocina. Ahora que estamos volviendo al invierno se nota que tiene más y más sol. Formará una especie de patio de entrada a la casa.

And of course, joining the two is a passage along the side of the house.
